One broadly accepted method of defining slurry particles has been developed by Govier and Aziz:
(or <1,250 mesh): Ultrafine particles, where gravitational forces are negligible
(or particles between 1,250 mesh and 140 mesh): Fine particles, usually carried out fully suspended but subject to concentration gradients and gravitational forces
(240 mesh to 15 mesh): Medium-sized particles, which will move with a deposit at the bottom of the pipe and with a concentration gradient
(0.039 in to 0.394 in): Coarse particles: seldom fully suspended and generally forming deposits on the bottom of the pipe
(0.4 in): Ultra-coarse particles, which are transported as a moving bed on the bottom of the pipe
